Did your little Checkers get Chubby this Holiday Season?

We all expect to gain a bit of weight over the holidays - and our pets are certainly gain some pounds too. Table scraps, leftovers and all the yummy little dog treats that they have received ~ you can bet he or she has packed on a few. Controlling your pet's weight is a critical part of taking care of your pet and their health.

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), it has been estimated that approximately 45% of dogs and 58% of cats in the United States are overweight or obese. Most pet owners don't even realize it until it is totally out of control.

The American Kennel Club warns that excess weight endangers the heart, lungs and joints and makes a dog more susceptible to other ailments such as diabetes and arthritis. Pets that stay at a healthy weight live longer and with less disease than overweight pets.

As with any health issue for you or your pet awareness and early detection of weight problems is crucial. By recognizing if your pet has a weight problem, you could save his/her life! Ask your veterinarian to determine the best weight and diet plan for them!

One simple thing that you can do is to feed your dog low calorie dog treats. Dog treats that are organic/or gluten free dog treats or sugar free treats are the best dog treat for a dog whose battling the bulge.

Medical Testing for your Dog

For many pet owners - our pets are more than JUST pets. Our pets offer comfort during life's challenges and friendship in the good and bad times. Most cases, our pets are a part of our lives and therefore we want to protect them. That means, they too - need to go the Dr. (vet) for checkups and tests.

Just like humans, at times we don't exhibit signs or symptoms but can be sick and not know it. Taking your pet to the vet will play a crucial part of keeping your pet well and and early detection of any illnesses. The sooner a problem can be found and detected, the sooner your pet can get treatment.

Some testing for your pet at the Vet could be -

A blood count - this is a solid way to gather information about your pet's overall health. Blood tests look at red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets and can identify any signs of infection.

Checking your pets urine/ waste - this offers some crucial information about parasites

Remember older pets need extra care and attention. Testing for older dogs could be thyroid testing, kidney testing and general movement testing for those achy bones.

Remember there are small things you can do to make your pet's life a little easier -

Purchase a wonderful elevated pet feeder so that they are not bending down to eat. The Presidential Dogs

If  President Grover Cleveland - our 22nd and 24th US President can own and care for a pooch - why can't you?  President Grover Cleveland owned a Poodle and although we don't know the name, we do know that his pup was his only pet and he loved the dog dearly.

Theodore Roosevelt - our 26th U.S. President was a true dog lover, he owned the following dogs:
  • Bull Terrier
  • Rat Terrier
  • Terriers
  • Manchester Terrier Manchu
  • Pekingese
  • Saint Bernard
  • Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Gerald Ford - our 38th U.S. President owned Liberty - a beautiful Golden Retriever born February 8, 1974 and given to Susan Ford as an 8-month-old puppy. Later Misty was born from Liberty Liberty was quite famous because of her visits to Camp David and her relaxing in the Oval Office with President Gerald Ford. This is one of the most lovely stories of love and compassion for a pet.

Most all of our Presidents were dog owners - maybe because they loved them no matter what and didn't care that they were truly the "commander and chief" of a country. Maybe because at the end of the day the dogs were truly happy to see them and expected nothing in return. With the re-election of our President - Barack Obama - (our 44th President) his dog Bo, a Portuguese Water Dog will serve a second term as well.

Although we have no official title of "First Dog of the United States of America" - it is certain that these pets served our country well.  At Cabo Dog - we salute all the Presidential Dogs - for a job WELL DONE.

Bathing your Dog is a Must!

If you are one of the lucky ones that owns a dog- just like giving your child a bath, your dog needs to be bathed regularly too.

Dogs need to be bathed about once a month to keep them clean especially during the fall months when the leaves are falling! If you have a "tromper or a romper" you may need to bathe more often.

When bathing your buddy make sure that you are using a dog shampoo that is a conditioning dog shampoo for your dog's dry skin. Do not use human shampoo. Human shampoo can contain fragrances and other ingredients that can make your dog's skin dry and itchy.

Cabo Dog carries a large supply of wonderful pet shampoo's and pet conditioners such as the Brightening & Conditioning Dog Shampoo with Yogurt & Honey - Sparkle & Shine is perfect for any dog that needs brightening especially dogs with light-colored coats.

You should try the Bubbles & Beads Dog Shampoo & Dog Conditioner - A fusion of botanicals and humectants delivers targeted nutrients directly to a dog’s dry and irritated skin. This all natural dog shampoo contains exclusive micro-beads packed with conditioning vitamins. They burst against the skin, delivering nutrients right where they’re needed; to dry and irritated skin. The result is a stronger, healthier, more lustrous coat.

Cain and Able make a great dog shampoo and conditioner that will leave your puppy smelling so yummy! This wonderful Conditioning Dog Shampoo comes in two scents - you can choose from  Lavender scent or Peppermint/Tea Tree. Both are wonderful for the skin. This all natural, gentle dog shampoo is made of mild cleansing agents that don't dry skin. Essential oils nourish your best friend's coat leaving it clean and shiny. The dog shampoo is infused with citronella and essential oils to naturally repel bugs and fleas while providing aromatherapy benefits. This dog shampoo is all natural, repels bugs and fleas and contains no harsh detergents. No artificial colors or perfumes and is even safe for the smallest of little ones.

Remember - whether you live on the beach or in the mountians - bathing your dog is a must to keep him clean and cuddly!

Grand Opening SOON

We are thrilled and excited to be reaching the final stages of our new website - www.cabodog.com.
We will carry great items such as dog bowls, dog apparel, dog collars and leashes and lots more.

Cabo Dog Pet Boutique first opened in Cabo San Lucas in the fall of 2011. Owner and operator, Christie Lynn Bonham, had recently met and married her husband, who happened to own an air conditioning company in this tropical location. After spending time in both Cabo and Park City, Utah, the family, including a very pretentious cat named Kitty, and a loveable yellow Labrador named Roy, set their sights on the horizons of the Sea of Cortez and moved south of the border.

In addition to being the dog loving type, Christie has an extensive background in the dog product industry. Christie developed and patented a dog bed and a natural line of aromatherapy for dogs. Therefore she noticed that Cabo was missing a real honest to goodness pet boutique, a Cabo Dog Pet Boutique where one could find something special for their dog, or a gift for a friend or family member who love dogs as well. Cabo needed an oasis from the sun and fun where one can shop, wonder and discover. The store opened months later and was very well received. Interesting people from around the world and from all walks of life came into Cabo Dog. Everyone had one thing in common, an unwavering dedication to their dogs and the lifestyle that leads them. After all, we all have families, but our customers are dog families. They are people who understand that these four-legged companions fill our hearts with a unique kind of love and loyalty that begins to define us. It makes us dog people, and then it turns us into dog families. Our mission has grown from providing stylish toys, treats and accessories. This website allows us to truly cater to our customers desire for fun, fresh, quality and creative merchandise that reflects our lifestyle. We strive to continually bring you the best product selection to meet your need and desire for items that will inspire, grow and build this amazing relationship with you and your pet. Our dogs mean the world to us, and our world at Cabo Dog is one we want to share with you. We are thankful to have the opportunity to serve you, and hope that our mission to provide exceptional customer service will make your time at Cabo Dog a meaningful experience. After all, we are all family, Dog Family, Woof!!
