November Is Adopt A Senior Dog Month!

Did you know that November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month? At Cabo Dog Boutique we do our best to spread the word of special rescue groups or adoption advocacy groups to encourage pet adoption. Senior dogs have a very special place in our hearts so we thought this was the perfect time to share some of the high lights to adopting a senior dog and making them a special part of your family!

Here we have the ASPCA Top Ten Reasons To Adopt An Older Dog. Heck, not everyone is into potty training so adopting a mature dog that is already housebroken is a definite plus! Also, Senior Dogs are incredibly loving and have a disposition of grace and ease. Those puppy years can be rough, but as a dog matures they begin to settle into their own, which is why the reason "What you see is what you get" can be a real blessing. Adopting a senior dog often times can be the  fast track to having the dog you always dreamed of!
If you have been thinking of adopting a dog already, by choosing a senior dog you can be a true hero. By raising funds, they can distribute to carefully selected organizations to ensure that senior dogs are getting the care and comfort they deserve. They host a special program called Donate A Bed where a person, family or company can donate a special bed designed for a senior shelter dog so they can rest easily and be more comfortable while waiting for their forever home. Cabo Dog donated to this fund last year, its a great program!
Just about any adoption or rescue group will have access to senior dogs in your community. One special group we support is Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. This organization has done so much for our senior population. Through education, advocacy and hard work they have taken in, rescued and happily re-homed countless lucky mutts since their inception in 2007.  You can always contact them for a reference of a group in your area!
With the holidays coming up, we know that a special puppy is often on the list. One of the most welcomed seasons of the year has arrived!  Fall is truly a favorite season for many people. Halloween Safety Tips For Your Pets

Halloween is a super furtastic holiday! As children we looked forward to dressing up as scary creatures or our favorite pretty princess.  We looked forward to Trick or Treating around our our neighborhoods with our friends and family collecting bags full of candy, what's not to love about Halloween! Its the holiday that brings out the creative silly side, and it will continue to be embraced for years to come.

Here at Cabo Dog Boutique we love the spirit of Halloween.  Dogs are part of our family and we feel that they too should be able to participate in the festivities! With so many creative dog costumes on the market these days we absolutely love stocking our store for the best Halloween yet! We have special Halloween Dog Treats as well as fun Halloween dog accessories or Halloween dog toys to help your pooch enjoy every minute of this absolutely silly and fun holiday.

Halloween safety is also something we must take into consideration as well. With all the running around and excitement, its easy that safety is always a concern! These helpful tips from Dr. Donna Spector are so that we can help to ensure you, your family and your four legged friends a safe and fun Halloween.  Read these top 8 tips and see what you think:

1.  Who doesn't love a dog in a costume? You may, but your pet may feel differently.  If your pet seems stressed by the costume, please remove it so as not to cause your pet any unnecessary stress or harm. Make sure the costume fits properly and won't obstruct their vision, hearing or movement.  Do not tye anything around your pets neck, and make sure all small parts or pieces are not able to be chewed or swallowed.

2. You can add reflective tape to your pets costume to keep them safe and seen in the dark.

3.  Although tempting, its better to leave your fur babies at home when going out to Trick or Treat.  Even the best trained dogs can become spooked and you don't want to risk them running off into the noise and confusion.  Keep them home in the safety of their home.

4.  Some pets may need to be isolated in a quiet room away from Trick or Treater's or those in costume.  Halloween is loads of fun, but if you know your pet and feel it may be overwhelming to them, put them in a quiet room with a toy or treat and wait for the excitement to pass.

5.  If you have a cat, especially a black cat, please be sure to keep them inside for up to several days leading up to Halloween.  There are cruel people who choose to cause harm to animals and by keeping your kitties inside you are doing your best to protect them.

6.  Make sure when opening the door to keep an eye on your pet and do not let them dart out the door!

7.  Avoid hazardous decorations such as flaming Jack-O-Lanterns and candles which can burn your pet.  Having your pet micro chipped is always recommended, so if you have not done so yet, Halloween is a great reason to take them to your local vet.  Micro chipping your pets is an investment that lasts a lifetime. It will significantly increase the chances of your pet being returned to you if they should run away.

8.  And finally, keep Halloween candy out of your pets reach.  Chocolate is toxic to pets and many candies can be harmful or make your pet sick.  Keep your counters clear of food and your lids firmly locked to prevent pets from eating wrappers or food items that are not good for them.
