Our Pets As Inspiration

If your reading this, than no doubt you have been stricken by the power of love that comes from having a pet. Pets bring us comfort, friendship and a sense of well being. But did you know that your pet can also inspire you?
Inspiration comes to us in ways that are hard to quantify. Yet at other times, the inspiration we can draw from our pets can be clear as a bell. I believe the most powerful tool a pet has to inspire us is through their actions themselves.

  • Compassion
  • Perseverance
  • Patience
  • Optimism
  • Living In The Moment

Compassion is something that not only helps the sad or stricken, but when we act out of a place of compassion we are treating ourselves compassionately as well.  Its a powerful thing to watch a dog visit a Children's Hospital as a Therapy Assist Animal and offer love to strangers they have never met.  They show that by being in the moment, and bringing compassion to those in need without thinking of themselves, it has a tremendous impact. Compassion helps to lighten the load, and it helps the heart to heal.

Perseverance.  We have seen it often in older dogs. Those we know have aches and pains from old age, but still manage to make the most of each day.  Perseverance comes naturally for dogs. I learned through the loss of my older dog Hambone that even when you should be holding strong for them, they hold strong for us. In tough times they inspire us to be steadfast and stay the course. We draw strength from their courage and perseverance. We can all do the same for others.

Patience is a virtue. I remember this saying from my childhood. With the way most of us speed through life these days, patience is running short!  Yet when we come home after a long day at work, we are reminded of how our pets wait ALL day for us. They wait patiently, well not always, sometimes there are chewed shoes or furniture in its place, but they wait to spend time with us. They wait each day to go for a walk, play ball or just snuggle up in front of the TV.  The most important part of their day is to rise and greet us with joy and excitement.

Optimism. When we fall on hard times, it difficult to maintain an optimistic attitude. Life turns heavy, and in those times it can be hard to see through to the other side. Dogs are a wonderful tool and teach us through their optimistic nature to let it go, look on the bright side, there is always another day.

To Live in the moment is to be free from all worries and concerns.  Sure dogs don't have much to worry about! The beauty in this inspiration is that most of time we are not even aware that they are teaching us the power of now! The lesson is in all the times you find yourself deeply connected to your pet. Maybe its when you stop on your walk to take in the view, give them a few pats and breath deeply. Or when you loose track of time because your both enjoying a game of fetch on the beach.  I have always believed in the power our pets have in connecting us to something greater in nature than ourselves. Its the mystery behind why we love them so deeply, and its their ability to inspire us to live in the moment.
Cabo Dog Boutique has a philosophy that by providing unique items to benefit and grow your relationship with your pets, we can help to nurture this amazing relationship and build a bond of love and compassion.  We have several unique Vintage Inspirational Dog Signs that reflect how we feel about our pets. Famous people have written inspirational quotes for centuries about the connection between man and dog. The Vintage Inspired Dog Sign "Whether you think you can, or think you can't, your probably right" by Henry Ford is one of our favorite quotes. We also stock a variety of Dog themed throw pillows that have inspirational quotes or sayings that you will love.  You can find them all at Cabo Dog Boutique home accessories section.
Dogs are an amazing animal. We so lucky to have companions that not only act as friends and family, but ast teachers as well.  The lessons we can all learn from our dogs are endless. Just be patient, act with compassion and optimism, and in those moments together their true nature will show through! Woof!

Time for Giving and Spreading Good Cheer

The Holiday Season is upon us, and our to do list seems to grow by the minute! There is shopping to be done, cookies to decorating to do. With so much going on, it is easy to forget what the wonders of the season are really about.
At Cabo Dog Boutique we are grateful for so many things this year. Mostly our ability to serve our wonderful customers and provide quality products that enhance the life you share with your furry family members! But we are also deeply thankful for all the volunteers and folks out there who dedicate so much of their time to better the lives of our fellow man, and our fellow Man's Best Friend!
With the season of giving in the air, we thought it would be nice to share with you some ways you and your pets can get involved and be part of the giving tree! Perhaps you just don't know what to buy for the dog that has everything! Or your looking to start a new family tradition. Giving back to your community or beyond is a wonderful way to get into the spirit of the season.
Pet Food Pantries have recently become quit popular and are a valuable asset to any community. The Bi-State Pet Food Pantry based in St. Louis is a shining example of how a Pet Food Pantry works. Ask around at your local pet stores for a pet food pantry in your area. You and your family, including the PUP, can make a donation of pet food in person which makes it a great family event. Pet food pantries operate 365 days a year, and rely on holiday donations to stock up for the coming months. People who have fallen on hard times are able to receive much needed food for their pets so that their pets can remain with them in their home. At a time when the family needs them the most, their beloved pets get to stay where the belong, at home, with their family. Its a wonderfully heart warming thing to do! And it could easily become a seasonal contribution for years to come. Some Pet Food Pantries work collectively with churches that offer food to their owners as well. Like the Pet Food Pantry in Park City, Utah. A helping hand for those in your community while not leaving the four legged family members behind! That's sure to bring some joy to your heart.
Perhaps you might like to start a donation box of your own for much needed items for a local shelter or Rescue group. Many groups like the Helen Woodward Animal Center have wish lists compiled where you can select an item or raise funds to purchase items from the list. Or, try setting up a collection location at your home or office for things such as food, toys and blankets. This is a wonderful idea as well, and allows you to engage your fellow co-workers or neighbors.
The recent Typhoon Haiyan that hit the Phillipines laid a trail of destruction that we are still not fully capable of understanding.  We know that these people have been dealt one of Mother Nature's most wicked blows, and many humanitarian groups are working to bring relief. But what about the animals affected by the storm? If you would like to learn more and make a donation to help the animal victims of Typhoon Haiyan you can visit the International Humane Society. Or the International For Fund Animal Welfare. These groups are accepting donations to help these pets get the care they need.
We hope that you and yours have the very best Holiday possible! May the the joys and wonders of the season warm your paws, heart and soul. Our pets mean everything to us, and are truly family, wouldn't it be nice to give in their honor? I think they would agree, Woof!

Shoes and Booties For Paw Protection This Winter

Winter has arrived for most of the County, and with that brings colder temperatures, rain and snow, burr! For those of us with fur babies in the family, this means getting our pups out for their walks is about to get a wee bit challenging. While we take certain measures to bundle everyone up, we should also be aware of what this means for our dogs paws. Extreme weather conditions can do damage to their feet, and at the very least make them uncomfortable. No need to make a hasty walk or hurry home only to watch your dog lick their paws from discomfort. Lucky for us there are now some excellent products on the market to help to combat winters drastic weather conditions, and put the pep back in their step!

Dog Booties are often recommended for those dogs that live in the colder regions. Snow and ice are hard on a pups feet. The salt often used to clean paths and walkways is also damaging to their paws.  Arming your pet with a pair of shoes for dogs such as the Thinsulate Aspen suede dog booties will give him optimal protection which means a happy, carefree and worry free walk for the both of you, bonus! The more time you can enjoy the outdoors the better!

Cabo Dog Boutique has nice a selection of dog booties or dog shoes to choose from. Girlie girls who want to strut their stuff will be happy wearing a pair of White and Pink Fur Dog Booties. These dog booties are have a designer look to them, but great protection and warm thinsulate lining. Duggs Shearling Dog Booties are available in two colors, tan and pink, so while you are comfy in your Uggs, your fur baby can also be cozy in their Duggs.
The products we carry are sassy and fashionable, which is always fun! But they are also made to withstand the elements. Holding up to Mother Nature is top priority.

Paw protection is a good idea for any active pup who trail hikes or has an active lifestyle in warmer regions as well. Protecting against the heat is as important as protecting against the cold.  Having a pair of dog booties or dog shoes handy is a good idea for any pet owner because chances are, at some point in time, you will need them! For dogs who are not exposed to sub frigid temperatures, Cabo Dog Boutique recommends Pawz Dog Boots. These dog shoes come in a pack of 12. The World's only disposable and reusable water-proof dog boot, they are made of natural rubber. PAWZ dog booties are  biodegradable  and designed to go on easily and fit securely. No zippers or straps to worry about, fashionable yet durable. These dog shoes come in six different sizes to pick from, to ensure optimal fit.

Winter is a magnificent season, why not make the most of it! Using protective dog footwear has never been easier. With some careful consideration and measuring, you and your dog can be off and going in no time flat! Woof!

November Is Adopt A Senior Dog Month!

Did you know that November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month? At Cabo Dog Boutique we do our best to spread the word of special rescue groups or adoption advocacy groups to encourage pet adoption. Senior dogs have a very special place in our hearts so we thought this was the perfect time to share some of the high lights to adopting a senior dog and making them a special part of your family!

Here we have the ASPCA Top Ten Reasons To Adopt An Older Dog. Heck, not everyone is into potty training so adopting a mature dog that is already housebroken is a definite plus! Also, Senior Dogs are incredibly loving and have a disposition of grace and ease. Those puppy years can be rough, but as a dog matures they begin to settle into their own, which is why the reason "What you see is what you get" can be a real blessing. Adopting a senior dog often times can be the  fast track to having the dog you always dreamed of!
If you have been thinking of adopting a dog already, by choosing a senior dog you can be a true hero. Seniors are often the last to be adopted and with the stress and noise of the shelter, the difficulty a senior dog endures can have a very negative consequence.  By choosing to adopt a Senior Dog you are literally saving a life, what better reason is there!
Mature dogs are great at enjoying easy living!  If you like to relax and don't want a high energy dog that needs a lot of exercise, a senior dog will fit in nicely to your home environment.
Cabo Dog Boutique has worked with some amazing organizations that raise money and fund special programs for our senior dog population. The Grey Muzzle Organization is a fantastic group that works to enable animal welfare organizations to improve their ability to provide care, comfort, and loving homes to senior dogs. By raising funds, they can distribute to carefully selected organizations to ensure that senior dogs are getting the care and comfort they deserve. They host a special program called Donate A Bed where a person, family or company can donate a special bed designed for a senior shelter dog so they can rest easily and be more comfortable while waiting for their forever home. Cabo Dog donated to this fund last year, its a great program!
Just about any adoption or rescue group will have access to senior dogs in your community. One special group we support is Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. This organization has done so much for our senior population. Through education, advocacy and hard work they have taken in, rescued and happily re-homed countless lucky mutts since their inception in 2007.  You can always contact them for a reference of a group in your area!
With the holidays coming up, we know that a special puppy is often on the list. Puppies need homes too, but if you think a senior dog would be a possible fit into your home we highly encourage you to consider adopting a senior. The love that comes from an older dog is immeasurable. Why wait for that puppy to grow up, when you can begin to enjoy the ease and pleasure of making a senior dog your companion today. Its something you won't regret! Woof!

Protective Eye Wear For Your Dog

Does your dog really need to wear sunglasses? That's a very good question! Dog eye wear has become very main stream these days and for good reason. Sure they look cute and lots of dogs actually enjoy wearing their sunglasses. But there are some real benefits that come from Doggles as well.

When riding in the car, dogs have a tendency to hang their head out the window. Whether it's to absorb the 10,000 plus scents that are passing as mock speed, or the joy of the wind in their ears, dogs simply LOVE it! Now imagine if you rode down the street, or highway, with your head out the window. Your precious eyes would take a beating dogs are no different. A small bug, rock of even dust can damage the eye and cause serious pain and irritation. Doggles sunglasses can be used for eye protection. Whether it's a ride in the car, convertible or the back of an ATV or motorcycle, eye protection is highly beneficial.

Dogs with existing eye conditions such as cataracts or Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca) can benefit greatly from dog sunglasses. Using Doggles or K9 Optix for these dogs will allow them greater access to fun and participation in any outdoor activity. Don't limit the time these dogs can participate in fun outdoor time with their family.

Doggles are the Solution for Safety!

  • Eye protection from flying debris in a car, motorcycle or open air vehicle.
  • Protects from the glare of the sun and prevents damage from Ultra Violet Rays.
  • Aids in the protection for existing conditions like Cataracts or Dry Eye syndrome.
  • A fashionable and functional accessory for any dog that fit comfortably.
  • Allows your pet to participate in a multitude of outdoor sports such as boating, hiking and winter sports without the risk of eye damage.

Just like us, ultra violet rays can damage your dog's eyes if they spend a lot of time outdoors. The bright sunlight can also mean sunburn for eyes and pink noses and skin of white short-haired dogs like the Dalmatian, Staffordshire, and Boxer. "Doggles" are what you might guess (goggles for dogs) offer excellent eye protection for the sandy bright beach and for riding in open vehicles. Protective eye wear such as K9 Optix are a wonderful tool to avoid any harm to your dogs' eyes.

Hiking or mountain biking with your dog can mean low branches or other hazards. Sunglasses for dogs are useful for any season really. The winter glare from snow can cause blindness in dogs and humans. Summer activities such as boating or days are lots of fun, but blowing sand or small bits of debris, as well as the glare all add up to a lot of eye strain for your pup. All these activities can add up to quit a bit of eye strain and open your pet up to a number of eye issues or conditions over a lifetime.

Protective eye wear means they can be part of the fun without risking further damage, pain or irritation.

Doggles and K9 Optix come in a variety of sizes, colors and designs to fit any dog. Cabo Dog Boutique has the largest selection of Doggles and K9 Optix available. We also carry Sunscreen for dogs that are a great benefit for dogs of fair complexions and short haired breeds such as the Dalmatian, Staffordshire and Boxer.
